Morning Work: Each morning as the students arrive, they will work on a “Morning Work” assignment. This is a short assignment that reviews concepts students are studying in Math and Language Arts.
Homework: Typically, homework will be assigned each day, except on Fridays. That said, there may be a rare occasion when there will be assignment or a project that will need to be completed over a weekend ~ but this will be the exception, not the rule. I believe that weekends are for family time. Each student will be responsible for copying down assignments in his or her agenda. I do not send out daily emails with assignments, because I want students to begin learning to take responsibility for their school work. Parents need to sign the agenda each night, including Fridays. This indicates to me you have checked to insure that your child has completed all assignments. Please look over assignments they have copied into the agenda and check for notes from the teacher.
Missing/Late Work: I grade using the point system. One point will be deduction for late assignments. Students who turn in work more than one day late will be given the opportunity to complete the assignment for half credit. Assignments more than one day late will receive a zero. This does not include make-up work for students who are absent due to illness or family emergencies. One day is give to make up assignments for each day a student in absent.
Weekly Work Folder: Students will bring a Weekly Work Folder home every Monday. All graded papers are placed in their student mailbox. At the end of class on Monday, students collect these papers and place them in their folder. The folder will contain all of the graded work from the previous week, as well as a weekly newsletter. Also included will be any information about upcoming school events or community opportunities. This folder needs to be signed and returned on Tuesday. Please remove all papers, sign the folder, and return it along with any comments on the very next school day. If the folder is not returned signed the next day the student will have to pull his/her card as a consequence.
Behavior: Students will be responsible for following the school rules provided in the Parent/Student Handbook as well as our classroom rules. In the classroom, we use a card system. Students will pull a card when he/she is not following classroom or school rules. After pulling three cards. students will write a behavior paragraph during recess. When the paragraph is completed correctly, it will be taken home for parents to review and sign. The paragraph serves three purposes. First, this provides an opportunity for students to consider his/her actions, and ways to correct the behaviors. It also gives parents the opportunity to see, in their child's own words, what happened to precipitate cards being pulled, and to discuss this with their child. It also provides students with additional writing practice. If the student continues to display inappropriate behavior, he/she will have to speak with one of the principals.
